This video focuses on the abstract concept of happiness. It connects nicely with “Mindfulness”, which is very en vogue these days, particularly in the corporate setting but the speaker has clearly got a book to sell and, perhaps, he has tried a little too hard to shoehorn his ideas into a structure so there’s plenty of room to apply some critical thinking (remember that students don’t need to agree with everything we put in front of them).
He explores the concept of “you have to suffer to really enjoy the good times”, which makes an interesting talking point as not everyone agrees. He also breaks down key aspects of happiness (but with some dubious labelling to retrofit his handy acronym).
The magic in this lesson is in the warm-up. Can students identify what makes them happy? For more reserved groups, you might want to set this question as a “thought-homework” at the end of the previous lesson.
This lesson is suitable for lower-intermediate and above
