THE SCIENCE OF THINKING: SYSTEM 1 VS SYSTEM 2

We like to think we make careful, rational decisions. Except, quite often, our brains have other ideas!

This video explores how we actually think, why some answers feel obvious before we have properly considered them, and what happens when our brains take the quickest route possible.

Which raises a few questions.

  • How often do we confuse a fast answer with a good answer? And when should we trust our instincts rather than stop and think more carefully?
  • Why can simple questions sometimes catch intelligent people out? Is the problem lack of knowledge, or the way our brains process information?
  • If thinking takes effort, how often do we avoid it without even realising? And what might that mean for the decisions we make at work and in everyday life?

So. Many. Questions!

For our Watch and Talk sessions, this video is a great starting point for discussion around decision-making, cognitive bias, critical thinking, learning, self-awareness and how our brains process information.
